I was recently seeing some smart phone commercials, and that got me thinking

My second grader goes to Harvard

Or so it seems! There is seriously a course conducted by Stanford for Kindergartners to 8th Graders. A friend of mine asked me if I am interested. Another friend sends her kid to a Learning Center called Kumon every Saturday. Like 5 days of school was not enough! And that’s all anyone can talk about – it’s a society of one-upmanship! Soon 2nd graders will be going to Harvard! So do I risk not sending my kid to one of these courses?
The school does behave like it already is Harvard anyway. My son is taking a vacation from school for two weeks. Well just short of 2 weeks actually. And the school wants me to sign “Independent Study” forms. They want me to sign a declaration saying that my son will be made to do school work every day during the vacation. Didn’t I just say vacation? And what’s more he needs to turn in the homework for the 2 weeks before he leaves on vacation.
This my friend is today’s world. My son was two and a half when another mom asked me “Can he write the alphabet?” I was surprised, but my son summed it up for me about 6 months later when I attempted to teach him “Mommy let me draw the wiggles, I will write A later”. However we live in this competitive society, the 2 yr old writer and 7 yr old Stanford graduate are going to be his peers. We are bringing our kids up in this world of achievers. We want to give our kids the best advantage they can have.
And we have the advantage of technology at our finger tips. When we brought home the iPad it was a cool gadget for the parents. Soon my son was downloading games and apps like Cool Facts and NASA. Needless to say I encouraged it. My baby daughter not to be outdone loves the doodle app and first school. However letting your one year old use an iPad has its disadvantages. While it is a given that the touch screen will be smudged and salivated upon, there is the fear that the iPad will be dropped and destroyed.

I love to write

I have been writing since I was very young. Even as a little girl, I wrote short stories and made up colorful characters. My son reminds me of my childhood passion some days. He loves to draw and work on comic strips. He has written some really creative comic strips that has made me proud. Now back to my writing woes. There came a point in my life when I stopped to write. I became so busy in the rat race that all I wrote were grocery lists.
Then a day arrived when I couldn’t do it anymore. I hadn’t picked up a book to read, or picked up the pen to write in years! Eventually I quit my day job and decided to be a freelance writer. Even if all I wrote then were health and technology based articles, I was writing again and that had my heart singing! It’s been a few years since I rediscovered my passion and again I am threatened. With kids and their schedules the time never seems to be any time to write.
Usually when my son goes to the library or to football practice I carry my laptop. There at the football field I would sit cooped up in my car typing away! But I have a little munchkin who thinks she owns the world. She wants to swat at my laptop, climb onto my lap and cause collateral damage. Now if my writings were interspersed with “353rfgfegertwe5t43543542”, my clients were definitely not going to like it! I was faced with a dilemma.

At 8 PM the house was quiet

The other day I started to write. It was a rare occasion in our household. At 8 PM the house was quiet, no super hero’s jumping into space, no toddlers attempting the chicken dance! I watch kids every day, it could almost be a profession

I love watching and talking to kids. They give you a whole new perspective to life. You could be having a real dull and depressing day and all it takes is a child to brighten it up. While your children give you the reason to live and love, children around the world can teach you many things. Children have taught me to smile, laugh and enjoy the simple things in life. They have taught me to think outside the box, to think without restraint and that sky is the limit. They have taught me to dream and make my dreams real.
Every week we spend some time at the library. My son attends a reading club there and my daughter and I sit down to wait. Every week I spend this time typing furiously at my laptop, getting my work done. A friend brings her kids who play with my daughter and we catch up on work! Today my brain was playing tricks on me; I was having what we nicely call writer’s block. So I sat there hands poised over my laptop, eyes glazing over, mind blank. Around me kids jumped around.
My friend’s daughter walked up to me and started to strike a conversation. She is 5 and the sweetest girl I know. So we had a long chat about school, her dogs and Halloween. We talked about green witches and wizard of oz; about scarecrows and vampire princesses (apparently they exist and wear black tutus). And then we talked about IPhone games, that is where we both decided to split up and get to our respective tasks, she to her IPhone game and me to staring at my computer screen.

My daughter had to go to the pediatrician today

And she had to get 3 shots on her thigh. It breaks my heart no matter how many times it is done. Watching your child cry is the hardest job we as parents have to go through. We know it makes your child feel better and its all for the good, but try telling that to my heart that skips several beats by the time we are done. We were out of the doctor’s office, and my daughter was calm again happy to have a little shiny sticker in her hand! But I was tired and exhausted after my hardest day of the week.
Every parent goes through days like this. The day you let your child run around in the park, you watch in absolute dread as the little feet totter through the park. And then the little munchkin totters and falters, your heart skips a beat and you run. Then she lands on her little butt and is up and running before you can blink. You can breathe again. I read about Steve Jobs, dead at 56

I came home last night and turned on my IPAD. I read about Steve Jobs, dead at 56. It seemed so personal, I immediately called my husband to talk! Later in the night, the kids were tucked in and I went on to my daily ritual of mindless surfing. I went on facebook, it was all anyone to talk about. Twitter was buzzing with the passing on of Mr. Jobs. Years ago Apple had reached a slump and Steve Jobs was rehired. He revolutionized Apple, took on the world and redefined our lives – Yours and Mine.
After the marvelous IPOD he went on to revolutionize Mobile technology with IPhone. More recently he created a new niche in the market with IPAD. Things I can’t live without anymore, things my family can’t live without it appears. As I type this my 15 month old daughter sits beside me playing Xylophone on the IPAD.

The world awaited with bated breath for the news about IPhone 5. Many was disappointed when IPAD 4GS was announced. Some were just excited about a new generation of IPhone. There will be lines outside apple stores next week as people clamor to hold the first of the new IPhones. “I will be one of those people” my internet technician told me the other day.
